Dangerous Drugs - Zyprexa

Zyprexa (Olanzapine) is manufactured by Eli Lilly and functions as a mood stabilizer. It has been used as a short-term treatment of bipolar mania and a long-term treatment for hallucinations, delusions, apathy and withdrawal due to schizophrenia.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved the drug Olanzapine (sold as Zyprexa) for sale in the United States and it has since been prescribed to over 12 million people worldwide. Zyprexa is part of a class of anti-psychotic drugs that includes Clozaril, Risperdal, Seroquel, Geodon, and Abilify.

In September of 2003, the FDA became notified of several serious side effects related to Zyprexa and as a result ordered Eli Lilly to change the label to warn patients of the potential complications. The complications that had been reported included hyperglycemia, diabetes, ketoacidosis, pancreatitis, and other conditions related to blood sugar which had in several cases resulted in coma or death.

The development of Ketoacidosis as a side of Zyprexa proved to have a 50% fatality rate. Zyprexa was shown to cause 50 percent more cases of diabetes than previous antipsychotic drugs. Many of the patients died as a result of diabetes which had gone untreated because the patient never knew they had developed the disease.
