Cipro and Levequinn are widely prescribed antibiotics β a class of drugs known as Fluoroquinolones. They are typically prescribed to combat respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, and bacterial infections of the abdomen and prostate gland. Following the anthrax scare in 2001 (when letters containing anthrax were mailed to public officials in Washington D.C), Cipro gained national attention, since itβs one of the most common drugs used to treat anthrax.
Unfortunately, both Cipro and Levequinn (along with other Fluoroquinolones) can have significant side effects in certain individuals. Two of the most common and disturbing problems include tendon rupture side effects and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN). A 2003 study conducted in Europe demonstrated that rats who were given Cipro developed inflammation and rupturing in their Achilles tendons.
By 2003, well over 300 people had reported similar tendon injuries to the Federal Drug Administration. It took another five years for the FDA to take action and mandate that Cipro meds include warnings about tendon rupture and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis.
Not every treated individual is equally likely to develop these side effects. Individuals who are older than 60 years old or who are on steroid therapy are at higher risk. Similarly, kidneys and lung transplant patients are at elevated risk.
