Dangerous Drugs - Ketek

Ketek is a prescription antibiotic drug manufactured by Aventis Pharmaceuticals and is commonly called telithromycin. Ketek is part of a class of drugs called ketolide antibiotics that is used for the treatment of bacterial infections in the lungs and sinuses. Ketek (Telithromycin) is a class of drugs called ketolide antibiotics used in the treatment of respiratory infections, including bronchitis and pneumonia.

These conditions include acute exacerbation of acute bacterial sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, and community acquired pneumonia of mild to moderate severity, including pneumonia caused by resistant strep infections. This drug was manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis and first approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April 2004.

On January 20, 2006 the FDA issued an email alert regarding Ketek and its probable association with serious liver problems. Three people had suffered severe liver damage as a result of taking Ketek. All three developed jaundice - characterized by the yellowing of the eyes and skin - and abnormal blood tests indicated diminished liver function.

One of the three recovered, one required a liver transplant and the third person died. Common symptoms of this potentially dangerous liver disease include itchy skin, yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, dark urine, "flu-like" symptoms, and abdominal tenderness near the liver.

Since the initial email alert there have been an additional four deaths and one liver transplant among patients who had been taking Ketek.
