Scapula Fracture
A scapula, or shoulder blade, fracture occurs when a large amount of force is applied directly to the scapula; as such, it is not a common injury. The most common causes of this type of injury are falls from significant heights and high-speed automobile accidents.
Symptoms and Treatment
The symptoms of a scapula fracture include pain and bruising. The individual will usually hold their arm across the chest and will resist all arm movement for fear of excruciating pain. In addition, deep breathing may be painful.
The treatment of this injury is non-surgical with use of an arm sling and early range of motion exercises.
Prognosis
These individuals typically have a good recovery.
