Injury from Airbag Deployment

Airbags, while a common safety feature, can inflict harm to the passengers of automobiles during an accident. The most common injuries that occur are chemical burns, broken noses, injury to the eyes, whiplash and broken facial bones.

With airbag deployment, the force exerted can cause blunt injury to the face as your head is rapidly accelerated toward the steering wheel and connects with the airbag, resulting in facial fractures or serious eye injuries. Eye injury can vary from broken blood vessels in the eye, detachment of the retina, lens rupture, or orbit (eyeball) rupture. In addition, the chemicals found on the exterior of the airbag can cause chemical burns to the cornea of the eye as well as the skin of the face.

Pain will be a common complaint after a serious car accident in Missouri. Other possible symptoms include:

• Visual disturbance
• Excessive eye tearing and redness
• Bloody eyeball if it has ruptured

Treatment and Prognosis of Airbag Injuries

The treatment and prognosis of facial fractures caused by airbag deployment are the same as those discussed elsewhere on this site. Serious injury to the eye may require emergency surgery; however, this may or may not completely restore a person's vision. Finally, chemical burns will require extensive washings and either eye drops or a burn cream depending on its location, face or eye.
