According to statistics compiled by both the International Civil Aviation Organization and the National Transportation Safety Board (NDSB), aviation safety has markedly improved over the past several decades, the popular imagining to the contrary notwithstanding. By contrast, in 2001, the year in which Al Qaeda hijackers crashed passenger jets into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, 1535 people worldwide were killed in air crashes, and there were 187 accidents. Interestingly, the number of air crash deaths in 2001 actually went down from the number in 2000 (1567). In 2007 and 2008, there were only 965 deaths and 876 deaths respectively.

Common causes of aviation crashes include: ice on the wings, explosions of fuel tanks, improperly working onboard equipment, general failure of instruments, collisions with birds, bad weather, poor maintenance, issues with airport runways, and failures of air traffic control. Yet by far the biggest cause of airplane crashes is pilot error – which accounts for well over half of all accidents from 1950 to present, according to one survey. Although fear of hijacking and terrorism consumes the minds of practically every air traveler in this "post 9/11" era, only 6% of all crashes have been due to sabotage.
